#15 Future Perspectives on Libraries

I read the IceBerg blog and agreed with the 3 topics that were discussed: Building the library collection, User Education, and Come to Us Services. Going through this program makes me anxious. I wonder how will I ever stay a step ahead of my patrons?...how will I ever learn everything that is out there?...how do I decide which is the best tools to share with my patrons? Rick Anderson discusses how we continue to build our library collection when actually, circulation statistics are down...shouldn't we be using our budget for more technology/Web services for our patrons? How much service are we expected to offer? I like Anderson's thoughts that the Web is also responsible for making new programs easier for patrons to use. And lastly, that we need to rethink how the library can reach our patrons, instead of expecting them to always come to us.

I played around with www.Technorati.com and had the most success when I searched under "posts". I came up with a list of bloggers who have been, or are, a part of the School Library Web 2.0. I liked one so much http://slimlibrary.blogspot.com that I added it to my delicious page, but then everything started shutting down!!! (see blog #13). I didn't add my blog to this website because I really don't know that I want anyone seeing my blog. Maybe I'll add it later.

The school librarian with whom I share my duties, has talked to me about www.delicious.com. So, I was very interested to do this part of the project. I moved all 285 bookmarks from my Favorites to Delicious, and then I tagged each one of them! It also gave me the opportunity to delete sites I no longer need. Delicious was automatically added to my igoogle account and since then I have had trouble using the Internet. When delicious is open, I get a message box saying that this "add-on" is interfering with Internet Explorer, and every tab I have open is closed down! I have tried to make changes to delicious, but finally removed igoogle as my home page, and open up tabs separately. Ouch! This program has certainly backfired on me until I learn how to solve the problem. I thought it was a great idea and I enjoyed organizing all my sites by tabs. It works al right at school, so it must have something to do with my home computer.
